horror she wrote

"It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open . . .  I beheld the wretch the miserable monster whom I had created . . ."  From FRANKENSTEIN; OR, THE MODERN PROMETHEUS by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.

envious

In a movie I just watched, one woman cut off the face of a younger woman who was like a daughter to her, then wore it like a mask to fool the guy both women wanted.  Although extreme, that shocking and regrettable act symbolizes how envy can change a person.

serendipitous

What if you are minding your own business and a curious stranger passes you by, carrying a sack that wafts a fragrance that strikes a chord — reminiscent of an intangible emotion; something distant, lost, perhaps never quite found.  A mere aspiration.  As evocative, perhaps, as a foreign market teeming with spices and intrigue.  Would you be drawn out of your corner, that staid familiar spot you inhabit upon this globe, to chase an inexplicable aroma which has dazzled your olfactory senses?  Might it compel you to pursue this cloaked mysterioso away from the light, away f
